No matter what exactly business you do online, if you are smart and serious one, you should be regularly making backups of your work. Just imagine how will you feel if something suddenly happens and you loose all your work for which you spended thousands of hours and sleepless nights. I am sure you won't like that feeling! Always DO BACKUPS! - don't be lazy and spend 10 minutes doing it!

In this article I will point how a smart backup is done, because there is big difference between doing a backup and doing it the proper way!

One big mistake people are doing when making backups is they put the backed up files on their same pc. Thats totally wrong people! If your hdd fails, or if your pc crashes, gets stolen or etc.. not only your main files are gone, but and your backups. Thats a total waste of the efforts you thrown for making backups!

Another big mistake people are doing when making backups is they just don't verify their just made backup. What if the archive you just created went corrupted for some reason? You will feel safe you have backup, but if it comes time to use it, you will find you were totally wrong. Always verify your backup archives!

Another big mistake people are doing when making backups is they just keep their last backup copy and when creating new one, they directly overwrite the last one. Thats totally wrong people! Keep atleast 2-3 old backup copies!

Another big mistake people are doing when making backups is they forget to backup info from their hosting. Don't forget to include the backup copy from your host, you will find it pretty useful if something happen to your sites.

The things above are just precautions, now let me show you how I am doing backups. Its a pretty smart way, I don't say its the best way, but it works totally great for me.

1) I am backing up regularly! Set your pc, cellphone or whatever you always have close to you to continuously alarm you about backup reminder. I found weekly backups do great for me, but you might need even daily backups if your work importance demand it!

2) I am backing up a way, so that I can easily access my backups and restore single files pretty easily. I bought myself a usb mobile hdd, about 40GB, so i just plug the cable in the USB, create new folder with today's date and copy in it all the work files and directories. This way I keep atleast 10 backup copies behind. You never know when some old info might be in help and you are assured if your last backup is not okay, you can restore from a previous one.

3) I am backing up on 2 different places. As i said I backup mainly on a external usb mobile hdd, but I am doing and compressed crypted backup on a usb flash device, as a secondary backup place and I always keep this small usb device in my wallet. This ensures me even if my main backup location fails, gets stolen or whatever i have the latest backup in my wallet on a safe place.

4) I do this every single week, no matter in what mood i am, no matter what happens! The whole process takes me no more than 10 minutes, and I like to spend those minutes but feel safe for all my business and for all my efforts i am throwing from from about 5 years in the online biz.

There might be and some more things to consider while creating backups, but thats depending on your specific work and etc.. As I said this might be not the best way to make backups, but from about year and a half i am backing up this way and it works really great for me, and no matter what happens i always have backups and I can deploy them just for few minutes!

Thanks for reading and I hope you will find it useful and resourceful!
